Our Simply Pure Ingredients

A Note about Our Henna: Currently, our entire line of Henna products are made entirely from Lawsonia inermis with the exception of Black Henna. Many botanical directories and those involved with scientific accumulation recognize the inermis species also as Lawsonia alba.

Our black henna consists of the following ingredients:

Henna leaf (Lawsonia inermis )

Henna bark (Lawsonia inermis )

indigo leaf and stalk

Indigo is a natural shrub in the legume family that thrives in dry and almost poor conditions. To date, most of it is commercially grown in India but China and southeast Asian countries are growing it with great success.

Animal cruelty free.

All Morrocco Method 5 Elements products are gluten free.

Lawsonia inermis

The only 100% truly natural way to color and condition your hair at the same time. Morrocco Method Henna is made from the powdered leaves of the desert shrub, Lawsonia. Henna contains hannatannic acid which, when mixed with hot water, coats the hair, sealing in the natural oils and tightening the cuticle, giving your hair a rich, healthy shine.

Important Henna Information

Our entire line of Henna products is made exclusively with Lawsonia Inermis. There is, however, one exception to this rule and this involves the black henna. MM Black henna consists of the following ingredients: Henna leaf (Lawsonia inermis), Henna bark (Lawsonia inermis), Indigo leaf and stalk. Indigo is a natural shrub in the legume family.

Made from the leaves, roots and stems of the Lawsonia plant, henna works its magic without damaging, without drying, and without chemically altering the structure of the hair. Its wide appeal has extended far beyond the young. It is also rapidly gaining popularity among the anti-chemical movement and the environmentally conscious.

A popular misconception is that henna means orangy to red. This is not true as you will see.

Actually, Morrocco Method 100% Natural Henna consists of 12 colors all derived from three basic shades: red, black, and neutral colorless. It is the combination of these three shades that creates the dazzling array of Truly 100% MM Natural Henna — 12 color-enhancers from three shades!

Each shade will look slightly different on each individual; MM Henna works subtly, bringing out the best in one's natural hair color. Of course, for the adventurous, each color can be mixed with others to create new shades. Individual experimentation is encouraged!

Here are the 8 shades of MM Henna available: Neutral (colorless), red, black, dark brown, medium brown, light brown, yellow gold, and blonde. To create the black a small amount of natural indigo plant is used.

Morrocco Method Henna can be used as often as desired. It can also be applied to dyed, bleached, relaxed or sun streaked hair.

  • MM Henna is a high quality hair conditioner.
  • Neutral colorless henna used alone will give more body, thickness and a shiny conditioned effect.
  • MM Henna has no lightening action.
  • Add color, create highlights, cover gray, or simply use as a 100% natural hair conditioner.
  • Use 2 or more colors to create subtle, multi-hued highlights.
  • Lasts up to 3 months.
  • Color safe for dyed, processed or bleached hair.
  • Zen Detox will not fade color but enhance it.
  • 48 hour enhancing time.

To warm up and soften chemically derived highlights, as well as to achieve Blonde streaks on graying hair use marigold blonde henna for your blonde tones. You can also tone down brassy color with marigold blonde.

Materials/supplies needed

Non metallic (glass or wood) mixing bowl, wooden spoon, rubber gloves, plastic or saran wrap, henna, and pre-made tea water.

Tea water instructions

For dark tones to black hair use 1 black tea bag. For light brown to blond hair use 1 green tea bag. Boil 3 cups water. Add tea bag and simmer for 15 minutes. (Optional: squeeze in 1/2 fresh lemon. A pinch of sea salt and a teaspoon of yogurt!)

Allow your boiling tea water to cool down to warm before mixing with henna.

For first time users of MM Henna!

We suggest using the neutral henna for first application. As henna does not penetrate the hair shaft it needs to adhere to something. Then apply the desired color going lighter at first then gradually darker.

For fine, short hair, use 4 tablespoons of MM Henna. For fine shoulder length hair, use 6. For thick, shoulder length hair, use 8. For very long or very thick hair, use from 10 to 12 tablespoons.

Place henna in a glass or wooden bowl. Add warm tea water gradually to henna, stirring until the mixture reaches the consistency of skin cream.

In order to achieve a stronger, deeper and longer lasting color let MM Henna sit for 2 hours before applying henna to the hair.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Applying Henna

Although much less high-maintenance than chemical processes, hair must be properly prepared to receive the benefits of henna. The following guidelines will help to ensure optimal results:

  • Make sure hair is clean and dry. Henna is most effective when applied only to dry hair.
  • Timing is dey. The longer you leave henna on hair, the more intense and dramatic the final shade will be. If you want a lighter and more subtle color a shorter processing time is recommended.
  1. Have plastic or saran wrap handy cut a piece the length of your arm and put aside for end of application to keep MM henna warm naturally!
  2. While wearing gloves apply mixture to dry hair. Always work over a sink or in a bath/shower. Start application of henna at the crown divide your hair into four sections. As you part each section of hair, apply henna directly to the roots to the ends evenly. After you have covered the crown massage the remaining henna into the hair and scalp. Then cover hair with plastic or saran wrap to seal in natural body heat. Leave in for 60 to 120 minutes. Remember. A longer period will result in a darker shade.
  3. Unwrap hair; rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove henna from hair. The difference will become more noticeable after the hair is dry. Hair will be brighter, shinier, and more Luxurious. For maximum color and sheen, do not shampoo for at least 24 hours to 48 hours. (MM Henna will continue coating the hair shaft.) Color will begin to fade in 6 to 12 weeks. To maintain desired hair color reapply anytime. More henna applications will only make color stronger and more vibrant.

Applying Morrocco Method Henna to dark brown and black hair

If your hair is 30% gray or more, you will need to use a 2-Step application. (see below).

Step 1 for first time users

We recommend neutral colorless henna!

Step 2 (color)

When mixing your color start with 50% your natural color and 50% next ligher color. For example you have short brown hair and will be using a total of 4 tablespoons of henna. You would then mix 2 tablespoons of dark brown henna (your natural color) with 2 tablespoons of medium brown henna (the next lighter color) You can always go darker on the next application. Leave on for 60 to 120 minutes before rinsing. Repeat this 2 step process for three consecutive times to create a deep, rich color.

Adjusting the color as you go, remember you can always go darker so use a lighter shade at first, then gradually increase the darker shade until you achieve the desired effect in color.

If the neutral henna does not work then you will need to use red henna. First as a filler and then the desired color — thus allowing more build up. Follow the two step process.

Applying henna to dark brown, black or 30% or more gray coverage

Step 1 (filler)

Add one shade darker of your base color to the red henna. Use a ratio of 2/3 red to 1/3 base hair color when mixing henna. Refer to the color chart to determine shade to use. For example, lets say I have long, thick medium brown hair. The next darker shade is dark brown henna which I will mix with red henna. So I would mix 8 tablespoons of red henna with 4 tablespoons of dark brown henna. Leave on for 30 to 45 minutes. If this does not cover the grey then next application use 100% red henna only.

Step 2 (color)

Mix your color. Leave on for 60-120 minutes before rinsing.

Hairline touch-up

If you just want to re-touch the front hairline simply use MM henna on your hairline and leave in for 45 to 90 minutes.

Applying henna to blonde hair

For fair hair, including 30% gray or more, use a single-step application of your chosen color. Leave in for 75-90 minutes. We suggest marigold blonde for sun streaks.

Rinsing out henna

Henna is most easily removed in the bath. Add a few drops of Euro Organic Oil to the warm water to detangle the hair. (You can also massage a few drops through your hair ends.) Submerge your head in the bathwater and gently massage the henna out. This can also be accomplished using a sink full of water. The third option is the shower, which takes a little longer to remove the henna particles.

Remember do not shampoo your hair for a minimum of 24 hours after henna. 48 hours is better as the color is still processing.

Soothing deeply nourishing treatment

Neutral colorless henna is a great hair conditioner if one does not want to color ones hair but wants to achieve body, thickness, sheen and conditioning.

Or for a post henna hair conditioner, simply use neutral MM Henna.

Henna Made Easy

by MMI henna enthusiast S. Chin

If you are looking to cover those stubborn grey hairs or simply want to add some interesting highlights and incredible shine to your hair without using harmful, damaging chemicals, then MMI henna is what you need.

A successful application of henna is easy if you follow these simple steps and use the products listed. All the products mentioned here are included as part of Morrocco Method's April 2008 sales specials so there's never been a better time to try henna or get away from using chemical hair color treatments.

1. Get your henna ingredients and tools ready.

  • a. Henna in color of choice
  • b. Euro Organic Oil Hair and Scalp Treatment
  • c. Glass or ceramic bowl
  • d. Coarse, stiff bristled small paint or basting brush — about 1" to 2" in width
  • e. Apple Cider Vinegar
  • f. Black tea (2 tea bags)
  • g. 3 -4 cups boiling water
  • h. Close-fitting plastic gloves
  • i. Cellophane cling wrap
  • j. Plastic grocery store bag (optional)
  • k. Old towel and newspaper

2. This Step is OPTIONAL : Shampoo your hair with one of MMI's four shampoos (I personally like to use Fire — Apple Cider Vinegar just before applying henna). Should you choose to do this optional step, after shampooing, while the hair is damp, spray in either Diamond Crystal Mist or Volumizer Mist leave in conditioner and comb through. Allow hair to dry naturally or use a blow dryer on a cool setting.

3. Make sure that your hair is completely dry before you apply the henna treatment.

4. Boil the water and when ready, add the 2 tea bags, 1 tablespoon Apple Cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon Euro Organic Oil to the water. Let the tea mix steep 4-5 minutes until the tea is nice and dark.

5. Spread newspaper on the floor where you will be applying your henna — it can be a little messy and this helps with clean up and preventing the henna from staining the floor.

6. In the ceramic or glass bowl measure in the amount of henna needed to treat your hair.

  • a. If you are a dark brunette looking to cover grey and create nice auburn highlights and shine an excellent henna color formula is: 4 tablespoons red, 3 tablespoons dark brown, 1 tablespoon medium brown.
  • b. For medium browns looking to cover grey and create nice auburn/dark blonde highlights and shine, this is a good combo: 4 tablespoons red, 1 tablespoon dark brown, 2 tablespoons medium brown, 1 tablespoon marigold blonde.
  • c. For a color change, enhancement or conditioning shine, any single color or mix of colors (not including red) can create an endless variety of shades and tones. Using red henna in your color mix is only recommended for coverage of grey or for true fire redheads looking to intensify their natural orange/red highlights.

7. Mix the various dry colors together in the bowl. Add the hot "tea" slowly, stirring the mixture with the brush until it reaches a smooth, yogurt like consistency. Too thick and it will be hard to apply, too much liquid makes it messy and the color won't take as well. If you accidentally add too much water, just add a little more dry henna in one of the natural hair color shades (not red) to thicken the mix to the consistency needed.

8. Wait a few minutes to allow the mixture to cool before applying.

9. Wrap the old towel around the shoulders.

Although you might be able to do this yourself, for best results, it is best to have a friend, family member or your hair stylist perform the application.

10. Start the application by parting the hair down the center and with the brush, pick up a generous amount of the henna and "paint" it down the part on the top of the hair, working it into both sides about an inch to either side.

11. Moving to the back of the head, do the same thing, splitting the hair, painting the mixture in.

12. Then, create another part in the hair to the left of the 1st part on the top of the hair and paint the henna in, just like before. Then again to the right, continuing to do this all over the head until all of the roots have been covered.

13. This process should use up about 2/3 of the henna. Scoop up the balance in both hands, dump it on the top of the head and spread it all over the hair, working it through down to the ends.

14. Once the hair is totally covered, gather all the henna dampened hair to the top/crown of the head and arrange it so it sits like a tight clump in place on the top of the head.

15. Tear off a piece of cellophane approximately 18 — 24" long and wrap it tightly around the hair, making sure that all areas of the hair where the henna has been applied are "sealed in."

16. I usually take a used clean plastic grocery store bag and put it over the cellophane and tie it in the front or use a hair clip to keep it closed. This creates another barrier to keep the body heat in — it is the heat of the body that makes the henna work.

17. Leave the henna on for 2 hours. This is the secret to good grey coverage and intense, rich color and shine.

18. Unwrap the cellophane and thoroughly rinse out the henna with warm water. DO NOT USE SHAMPOO, just rinse it.

19. Let the hair dry naturally or use a blow dryer on a cool setting.

20. Once dry, brush hair thoroughly with an MMI natural boar bristle brush.

21. DO NOT SHAMPOO HAIR FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS AFTER TREATMENT.

In some cases when covering grey, the color achieved after one application that contains 50% or more red henna may be too red or brassy for some complexions. Not to worry. After the 1st application, rinsing and drying, you can immediately apply a second application. This time, eliminate all red henna from the color combination and only use the browns or blondes desired. Apply the same way as before but you only need to leave the second color application on for 1 hour. The second application tones down the intensity of the red henna which acts as a filler to cover grey hair.

Just like the 1st application, only rinse the henna out with warm water. Do not shampoo the hair for 24 hours after treatment.

The henna treatment will last for about 6-8 weeks depending upon hair growth. Because of its intense color, you will see demarcation as your hair grows out. This will be more obvious for those using henna for grey coverage. The henna color will not fade as visibly as chemical coloring and use of MMI shampoos and conditioners will help prolong its intensity and conditioning properties.

Good luck and I hope your enjoy your new all natural hair color!

Using Morrocco Method Henna for the First Time: A Personal Account

I've made up my mind. I'm due to get a touch-up as the gray is starting to show. I've decided to go completely natural. So, I say: "Goodbye chemicals!" I opt for Morrocco Method Henna instead.

I'm feeling scared yet excited at the thought. It seems so bold, so risky. I have no idea how my hair is going to turn out. All I've heard about henna is that is turns hair orange. At least, there are many shades to pick from.

The big day has arrived. I've got the henna and a glass mixing bowl (metal is not recommended ... I'm not going against that advice!). Now, I need a wooden spoon, rubber gloves (I used latex gloves) and plastic wrap (that should be interesting).

I need to make some tea to mix with the henna. In my case, I use green tea since the henna is a light color. Making the tea shouldn't be too difficult. I've made tea before! So, I use 3 cups of water and boil the tea. Then, I let it simmer for 15 minutes. At the next step, I add the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of Celtic Sea Salt.

To Cool or Not to Cool

Do I need to let it cool down? It doesn't say ... well, the henna is a living plant so boiling it is probably not a good idea.

Okay, I'll let the tea cool down. In the meantime, I get the henna ready. How much should I use? Since my hair is long, I'll use 12 tablespoons. This way I won't worry about running out before I'm done. That would not be good! As it's the first time I do anything like this, I might mess up.

I've got the henna waiting in my bowl. I check the tea. It's warm. Okay what's next? Time to mix. The directions say to add the tea gradually and stir until it has the consistency of a thick cream.

What does that look like? Oh, and it also says that it is important that I properly mix it. Okay ... what will happen if I don't? Well, I've come this far ... might as well continue!

I start adding the tea water, a little bit at a time. After a while, it seems to be holding together and it is kind of like a cream. I guess it's ready. I let is sit for 2 hours so the color can intensify.

The Moment I Have Been Waiting For

Finally, the moment I have been waiting for. I get to be my own hair color specialist. Hopefully, I'll still think it was a good idea when I see the results!

I cut a long piece of plastic or saran wrap and set it aside.

I put on the gloves. I've chosen to apply the henna over the bathroom sink in case I make a mess. In case I make a mess? Like I'm not going too? Right! Plus there is a big mirror so I can see what I'm doing.

I wonder what technique works best to apply the henna evenly. I try to recall how I've seen hairdressers apply hair color. That doesn't help! I've never seen one use her fingers!

Okay henna ... it's just you and me! I'll improvise. I settle on a wide tooth-comb and start parting my hair. The directions say to start at the crown of the head. I stick my finger in the henna. It's like playing with mud!

Having Fun Being Messy

I take a big glob of the stuff and plop it on my scalp. I spread it as best I can careful not to pull on my hair with the gloves. I keep parting my hair and applying the henna. Not bad! It's not as hard as I though it would be. I'm actually having fun being messy.

Eventually, I have covered the top of my head. I apply the henna to the rest of the head starting at the back and finishing with the hair. I use up all the henna.

Now, I wrap the hair using the plastic wrap. I hope no one important decides to visit right now!

I've decided to go for it and leave it on for two hours.

The Moment of Truth

Two hours have passed and the moment of truth has arrived. I remove the plastic wrap. Now the fun part ... getting all that stuff off my hair.

As suggested, I opt for the bath method. I add a few drops of the Euro oil to the water and get in the tub. I dip my head in the water and start loosening up my hair. The water turns brown. I hope it doesn't stain!

Eventually, my hair feels clean. It's done! I let my hair dry.

Time to check out how it turned out. My hair feels thicker and silky soft. It has a very healthy sheen! Wow! I like it! It looks even better outdoors with the sun shining on it. I have all these highlights and they actually look natural.

No more artificial hair color for me. From now on, I'm using Morrocco Method Henna and nothing else!
