Henequen scrubbers have properties that allow them to exfoliate, remove dead skin cells, and improve circulation. The henequen fiber is obtained from the Agave fourcroydes, a plant that belongs to the Agavaceae family. In this family one can also find the Sisal and the Tequila agaves. Henequen is mainly produced in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The Mayans were the first to discover its properties and amazing resistance and used it in ropes, hammocks, rugs and even in clothing.

Later the Spaniards discovered the potential of both the plant and the fiber and began to export it to Spain. In the nineteenth century, the production of henequen was so vast that Yucatan became one of the richest states in Mexico. The fiber was exported to several countries and the haciendas that worked the fiber began to obtain very large profits. 90% of the rope production of the world took place in Yucatan.

Hand Chrocheted by Local Mexican Artisans

The production of henequen began to decline with the coming of the Mexican Revolution and because of the problems that surged once the war was over. Then, around the 1950s, synthetic materials became very popular in rope making and the decline of henequen became definitive.

Recently henequen has once again been recognized as a very valuable material. Its resistance and malleability has allowed it to be used in things ranging from large industries to delicate handcrafts that can be soft enough to use for personal care.

Tsots-Ki

Tsots-ki — an ancient Mexican name for a natural ingredient that was part of pre-Hispanic Mexican tradition and now is used to make all natural Morrocco Method henequen soap pouches.

Tsots-ki, or sosquil, is a Mayan term for "henequen hair." Morrocco Method offers a complete line of bathing and spa accessories made from natural henequen fiber.
